Bringing together the most up-to-date techniques in investigative interviewing and operational communication and applying them to the growing concern of insider threat. Drawn from hundreds of years of combined experience of our instructors in law enforcement, counterintelligence, and security, this course will help students to proactively manage the human aspects of insider threat. Techniques that will enable your personnel to establish and exploit information networks to detect and mitigate potential and actual insider threats. You will learn to build rapport and gain trust within the organization to enhance the flow of insider threat information and indicators. Ask the right questions at the right time gaining the information you need to protect sensitive information and systems. You’ll learn proven memory retrieval techniques to maximize your information collection. Add elicitation skills to your information collection capabilities. Read people quickly and accurately, so that you may adapt your communication approach to be most effective and most of all learn the behavioral and emotional clues that give away a liar including training on the micro facial expression of emotion.

Insider Threat Mitigation is a dynamic multi-dimensional approach to the problem of insider threats. The central concept of the approach is to enhance the flow of information to professionals monitoring insider threats. This relies on the use of questioning and elicitation to get the truth from suspects, witnesses, and any other subjects of interest. The techniques taught in this course combine the knowledge gleaned over 40 years of scientific research and validation through real-life application by professionals such as attorneys, law enforcement, regulatory inspectors, intelligence agents, and investigators.

Anyone concerned in protecting their company’s or organization’s sensitive information from insider threats.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS

Willingness to learn new techniques in detecting deception. Students will be required to rehearse, apply and retain information during this training course.

Just the willingness to learn how to find the TRUTH in an interview, meeting, or discussion. Students may bring and laptop and a willingness to participate in classroom exercises.

TRAINERS

Deputy Sheriff Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Jose L. De La Cruz has over 18 years of public safety experience. He has been a police officer for the Compton Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He is currently a patrol Deputy overseeing several Sheriff Security Officer’s, providing law enforcement duties for the Department of Public Social Services and Department of Mental Health. Jose has worked custody, patrol and assisted in developing a curriculum for the Department of Homeland Security on Behavior Assessment. Jose also assisted in development and curriculum design on a national curriculum for the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Grants and Training. The purpose of the program was a Weapons of Mass Destruction, national training program for non-sworn transit security personnel (Terrorism Awareness: Protecting the U.S. Public Transportation System). Jose’s responsibilities included writing a detailed curriculum, authoring proposals, work plans and networking with a multitude of agencies, governmental and private alike. Jose was also part of a Special Problems Unit, targeting crimes against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, specifically the investigation, interviewing, identification and apprehension of graffiti taggers. He also handled and conducted numerous criminal investigations in various types of crimes, ranging from Criminal Homicide to Petty Theft while assigned to patrol. Jose is a graduate of the POST Instructor Development Institute (IDI) Levels 1-3. He is a certified Analytic Interviewing Trainer, a general instructor for Center for Domestic Preparedness, and a general instructor for California Specialized Training Institute

Robin served thirty years within the Metropolitan Police Service London UK [as a New Scotland Yard Detective] : his main experience being the investigation of major crimes and homicide. Supervising teams of Detectives and case managing many murder enquiries he also performed the role of Office Manager in a busy Major Incident Room [Overseeing sixteen concurrent investigations]. As a qualified trainer he became the lead instructor at the New Scotland Yard Detective Training School [2009 wrote the Specialist Interviewing Course for advanced interviewers in Homicide, Rape, Hi -Tech Crime and Terrorism]. He specialized in interviewing, investigation skills and a key part of the investigative criminal law [Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996]. He later took on a national role as the lead investigative interview training coordinator for the United Kingdom. His role was to support and design training materials for the 43 forces of England, Wales & Scotland. He has also applied his skills to the private sector and secured a contract with the Oracle Corporation and was an approved training supplier for over five years teaching various business groups [Sales teams, HR through to Vice Presidents] both in interviewing and negotiation skills with a hostage negotiator. He received advanced interview training in the U.K. by the Institute of Analytic Interviewing [IAI] and has since become a member of their organization; fusing the best learned skills of the U.K. and the USA to provide a unique interviewing course experience. He has taught on many occasions to a variety of customers in the US as one of the IAI approved trainers. Privately he has trained police forces from around the world from The Caribbean, Central Europe and the Middle East. As an experienced trainer he believes the importance is not just the subject material but how it is taught and whether it is practically adaptable to the customer’s line of work or indeed their private lives for effective communication and listening are truly life skills. He seeks to continually improve training materials and examples in order to make the learning experience one that proves to be transformational for the delegates.

Randy Marcoz is a retired Army lieutenant colonel. He served in the Army for 20 years as an intelligence/counterintelligence officer. He completed a post graduate program in strategic intelligence and holds an MS in forensic psychology. Randy is also a certified Master Practitioner of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. He created the Intelligent Communication approach, based on his education and experience, to help people develop communication skills to better connect with people and become more compelling in their interactions. He has been providing Intelligent Communication training and services to government and corporate clients for the past ten years.

HOSTING A SEMINAR

The overall seminar topics, length, format, and content can be customized to meet your needs. These hosted seminars are available on either a contract or co-sponsored basis.  With either the contract or the co-sponsor option, the hosting agency will need to provide a suitable training location.

Contract Program

Any of IAI’s  seminars can be conducted on a contract basis, offering the agency a fixed rate based on number of seats from your specific agency.  This allows a specific agency to estimate its costs accurately and to train more investigators at a reduced cost.  Investigators from other agencies may be invited at the discretion of the contracting organization.

  • Hosting Agencies overall cost reduced with no travel, lodging or extra per diem expenses.
Co-Sponsored Seminar

The host agency will partner with IAI to deliver a co-sponsored program. The host agency will need to provide a training location and some marketing support.  

IAI will be responsible to promote the event to area law enforcement agencies and be responsible for the production of marketing flyers, seminar materials, speaker expenses, registration and invoicing. The host agency will be compensated for the training location and marketing support with free training slots in the seminar.

Benefits of a Co-Sponsored Seminar:

  • IAI is responsible for all promotional materials, speaker expenses, registrations and invoicing. 
  • The host agency receives free seats in the seminar and only has to pay to register additional attendees beyond the complimentary registrations.
  • IAI provides a national coordinator to market the program and support the seminar.
