Jose L. De La Cruz

Jose L. De La Cruz has over 17 years of public safety experience. He has been a police officer for the Compton Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He is currently a patrol Deputy overseeing several Sheriff Security Officer's, providing law enforcement duties for the Department of Public Social Services and Department of Mental Health.

Jose has worked custody, patrol and assisted in developing a curriculum for the Department of Homeland Security on Behavior Assessment. Jose also assisted in development and curriculum design on a national curriculum for the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Grants and Training. The purpose of the program was a Weapons of Mass Destruction, national training program for non-sworn transit security personnel (Terrorism Awareness: Protecting the U.S. Public Transportation System). Jose's responsibilities included writing a detailed curriculum, authoring proposals, work plans and networking with a multitude of agencies, governmental and private alike.

Jose was also part of a Special Problems Unit, targeting crimes against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, specifically the investigation, interviewing, identification and apprehension of graffiti taggers. He also handled and conducted numerous criminal investigations in various types of crimes, ranging from Criminal Homicide to Petty Theft while assigned to patrol.

Robin Carr

Robin is a former New Scotland Yard Detective who served thirty years within the Metropolitan Police London UK.

His experience is in investigating homicides, major crime and specialist high profile investigations. Operationally he has a wealth of experience in investigative interviewing, both witnesses and suspects.

Latterly in his police career he qualified to teach and became the lead instructor at the Hendon Crime Academy both writing and then teaching the advanced interview course to police officers. [PEACE Tier 3]

During this period he also trained in the United States of America with JJ Newberry and others from the Institute of Analytic Interviewing in interviewing techniques, which included micro-expressions and body language and other means to detect deception. [Hot spots]

This became a stepping-stone for him to become the national lead training coordinator for UK interviewing: representing the National Police Improvement Agency. He was responsible for quality assuring police training in interviewing across the UK.

Herman Camacho

Herman Camacho conducts interviews and investigations as a consultant for the Institute of Analytic Interviewing. He is also a seminar speaker for training courses for the Institute of Analytic Interviewing. Herman attended California State Fullerton University where he graduated and obtained an Associates of Science degree in Human Sociology.

Herman is a current Law Enforcement officer with 19 years of experience. He worked with California State Police, Compton Police Department until the city merged with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Herman is currently assigned as a senior detective investigating all types of crimes against persons and property. His current assignment consists of high profile investigations, major crimes, bank robberies, kidnaps, and series style of investigations.

Throughout his experience, he has worked in an undercover capacity while interviewing inmates in a custody environment. His undercover investigations consist of street gangs, organized motorcycle gangs, custody style investigations, and organized Central-America cargo gangs. He also conducts street Intel gathering from various types of gang members.

As a qualified trainer he instructs other detectives on updated techniques involving interviews, rapport building, preparation for interviews, statement analysis, micro-expressions and cyber security.


Herman also works in the private sector as an Executive Team Leader – Asset Protection for Risk Control Strategies in the Los Angeles area. Herman is a team leaders were he conducts mobile and static surveillance on employee’s being investigated. Herman is also an instructor for employee termination interviewing techniques, criminal apprehension techniques.

Herman has attended several courses on interviewing techniques and in March of 2007 he became a member of the Institute of Analytic Interviewing family. Herman has attended several other courses from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles Police Department, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).

Lieutenant  Brian Smith

Lieutenant Smith has 33 years with the Sheriff's Department. He is currently assigned to the Lancaster Sheriff's Station, located in the north end of Los Angeles County. He is a recent graduate of the FBI National Academy. Lieutenant Smith has worked a variety of assignments including custody, patrol, investigations, and training. As a lieutenant, he spent 7 years assigned to the Department's Training Bureau and assisted in managing both sworn and civilian training throughout the Department. Lieutenant Smith is currently an instructor with the Sheriff's Department Analytical Interviewing Course, which is required for all Department investigators.

Lieutenant Smith also formerly supervised the Department's Mental Evaluation Team which conducts investigations of the persons with mental illnesses.

Lieutenant Smith has a bachelor's degree in Business Management from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

David M. Maxwell, Jr.

David. M. Maxwell, Jr. began his law enforcement career with the Texas Department of Public Safety in November 1972 as a Highway Patrol Trooper. In 1981 he was promoted to sergeant and transferred to the Narcotic Investigation Division, where he worked intensively undercover. He was also the lead investigator on a number of sensitive and complex narcotic investigations. In February 1986 he was appointed to the Texas Rangers, where he specialized in homicide and murder-for-hire investigations, often posing undercover as a hit man. David soon obtained a reputation as a tough, honest and thorough investigator with an uncanny ability to get to the truth of the matter that impresses the most seasoned investigator.

David was one of the lead investigators in the post investigation of the ATF raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, TX and the siege afterwards by the FBI. He displayed the integrity of the Texas Rangers during that investigation by not allowing political pressure to interfere with his obtaining the truth and earned the respect of his peers at all levels of law enforcement.

David's interviewing skills are recognized by other investigators as being outstanding. Because of this he was asked by ATF to become an instructor for the Analytic Interviewing Course. In 1997 he attended the Advanced Analytic Interviewing Instructor Course at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, Georgia where he shared his techniques and knowledge with the rest of the instructors and students. Since that time he has returned to Texas, where he has practiced and applied in the field what he learned and is now being sought as an instructor and consultant in Analytic Interviewing.

 

Greg Feldman

Greg Feldman has nearly four decades of law enforcement experience, beginning in the Chicago area where he worked for Northwestern University's Public Safety Department and the Northfield Police Department. In 1980 he began a 25-year career with the South Miami Police Department, where he headed, at one time or another every division of that agency, spending more than half his career in investigations and retiring in 2005 as Assistant Chief of Police. From there he spent time as the Director of Safety and Security at Johnson & Wales University in North Miami until 2007 when former Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth tapped him to be the Southern Region Criminal Justice Coordinator for the Florida Department of Children and Families. While performing those duties he remained active in law enforcement as a Reserve Police Officer (for a dollar a year) with the West Miami Police Department. Greg retired as a West Miami Sergeant and from the Coordinator position in 2013, and relocated to Palm Coast FL.

During his tenure with South Miami he received numerous awards and certifications, including Manager of the Year, Sergeant of the Year, Officer of the Month and more. A skilled public speaker and presenter, he functioned as the department's Public Information Officer for 17 years. He created and administered the police department's asset forfeiture unit, bringing in well over $1,000,000 in criminal's ill-gotten gains. For several years he also did Internal Affairs investigations and handled several high profile cases involving agency personnel. He was on the committee which established and built the first Investigative Support Center in Miami (later South Florida HIDTA) and worked with several Federal inter and multi-agency task forces.

Assistant Chief Feldman has attended over 1000 hours of additional training, including the Criminal Justice Institute's prestigious Senior Leadership Program (class #1) and the Chief Executive Seminar. He has been a certified law enforcement instructor since 1985 and holds a Bachelors degree from the University of Oklahoma. In 2009 he was one of less than two dozen people from around the globe to attend the Institute for Analytical Investigations' two week train-the-trainer course.

His community contributions include membership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (life), Florida Police Chief's Association, Miami Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police, Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute Associates (former state president), Dade Miami Criminal Justice Council, Miami Dade Crimestoppers (board member), All Police Charities (board member) and Miami Dade County Mothers Against Drunk Driving (co-chair). He is a former member of the Florida Bar Grievance Committee and a current Diplomat and Trustee of the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce.

George Gelman

 
George Gelman has a Bachelor degree in Computer Engineering, a Master’s degree in Business Administration and two Postgraduate diplomas: in National Security and Strategic Studies, as well as in Strategic Management of Police Intelligence Units.
 
He is the CEO of Centro Internacional de Inteligencia, S.A. de C.V., Mexico based company, specialized in training, consultancy and outsourcing in intelligence, counterintelligence, investigations and trustworthiness assessment, as well as other law enforcement and security topics.
 
He was an adviser of Mexican Attorney General, heavily involved in the redesigning process of the intelligence areas of the Attorney General’s Office, and is still an adviser in intelligence and counterintelligence of some major corporations and law enforcement agencies in Mexico.
 
From 2001 to 2004, he was the founding Vice-president of IALEIA (International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts) Chapter Mexico; from 2005 to 2007, he was its Treasurer and from 2009 to 2011 he was its Professional Development Director. In IALEIA International, from 2004 to 2009, he was the Director at Large for Latin America and the Caribbean; from 2004 to 2005, he was part of the Strategic Planning Committee; in 2006 he was the General Coordinator of IALEIA World Intelligence Training Conference, realized in Mexico City; from 2011 to 2015, he was the Membership and Outreach Director; from 2014 to 2015 he was part of the Conference Planning Committee and from 2013 until today he is part of the Award Committee, as well as of the International Committee, being in charge of Latin America and the Caribbean. He has been trained in intelligence in different prestigious organizations, like the West Yorkshire Police Training and Development Centre in Wakefield, UK, the Canadian Police College in Ottawa, Canada and the Intelligence and Counterintelligence School of the National Police of Colombia in Bogota, Colombia. He has also been trained in different law enforcement topics, like Interviewing and Interrogation, Scientific Content Analysis, Handwriting Analysis, Crime Analysis, Investigative Analysis, Terrorism Analysis, Hostage Negotiation, Open Source Intelligence and Executive Protection, just to mention some.

Gretchen Fretter

Gretchen Fretter received her first Master's Degree from the Trainers of Teacher Trainers Program at the University of Pittsburgh. She received her B.A. and her Standard Secondary Teaching Credential at UC Berkeley. She taught French, a skill acquired from her childhood and college years studying in Paris and in Grenoble.

Gretchen's father, a professor of Physics at Cal and her other mentor, August Vollmer an early professor of Criminology at Cal, Chief of Police in Berkeley and inventor/collaborator on the polygraph machine were formative in her decision to enter the East Bay Regional Police Department.

She graduated with honors from the Police Academy and served as Patrol Officer, Sergeant, Acting Lieutenant and Homicide Detective prior to taking the position as Police Academy Manager at the Contra Costa Regional Training Center at Los Medanos College. She received her second Master's Degree in Public Administration in 1991. She was named Director of the Training Center responsible for not only the Police Academy but all of the Advanced Officer courses, the Paramedic Academy, Fire Academy, EMT and an extensive curriculum of the college level courses associated with law enforcement, fire and pre-hospital care.

Gretchen met Paul Ekman when she hosted the Analytic Interviewing course that Paul Ekman and JJ Newberry created for advanced interviewing training. She continued her training and teaching with Paul Ekman after she retired from the Training Center. She teaches for the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department and the South Bay Regional Training Center. Gretchen team taught with Sue Oliviera and Mark Peterson to deliver one of the first Emotions Revealed courses in Pacific Grove.

Gretchen lives in the California foothills. She raises grass-fed beef on her ranch, serves in the El Dorado County Mounted Search and Rescue Unit and enjoys a new endeavor in Real Estate helping people find the wonderful style of life she knows.

James Brunet

Mr. James Brunet is an attorney admitted to practice in Florida, an active duty police officer with a large metropolitan Florida police department and a certified Analytic Interviewing instructor.

James earned his Juris Doctor degree with high honors in 2004 from Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, Florida. While in law school, James was an active member of the Moot Court and Law Review, and served as a teaching assistant for several first and second year courses. James has been involved with practice in several areas of law including civil, criminal, and appellate, and is presently serving as the Assistant Police Legal Advisor at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. James earned his BA with honors from the University of North Florida, with a dual major in Criminal Justice and Political Science, and has completed all the didactic course work for a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) at the same institution.

Additionally, James is a certified police officer in the state of Florida, has completed numerous advanced law enforcement training courses, has completed the Police Legal Advisor's Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Georgia, and recently became certified to teach Analytic Interviewing after attending the Institute of Analytic Interviewing instructor's course in early 2010.

In addition to being an attorney, James is also an active duty police officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office ("JSO"). He has been a member of the JSO for 24 years, beginning his career as a reserve police officer while stationed in Jacksonville with the United States Navy, leading to his present position as a member of the Sheriff's executive staff in the Legal Unit. During his many years with the JSO, James has worked in a variety of assignments, including the legal unit, patrol, narcotics and vice, investigations, undercover and surveillance, bicycle patrol, aviation, and as a member of the police scuba team. James's diverse law enforcement career and his educational background have afforded him many opportunities to both hone and teach his interviewing and rapport-building skills.

James has taught a number of courses and given many presentations on various topics, and he recently attained his Florida law enforcement instructor's certificate. James routinely teaches at the JSO Police Academy and has become adept at tailoring his message to his audience. As one recent student commented, James' instruction was "the most relevant" she has had. James's real-world, street experience combined with his academic achievement and intellectual curiosity give him a unique perspective and the ability to relate well to diverse groups. James has also formed a company called "The Whole Truth" through which he will teach Analytic Interviewing and a testimonial skills course, "True Testimony" he developed for police officers and other professionals who must routinely testify in court or depositions.

R. Edward Geiselman is the co-developer of the Cognitive Interview technique.  He has been a Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, for 34 years.  He earned his Bachelors degree from Purdue University in 1972 where he studied engineering and psychology.  Subsequently, he earned both Masters and PhD degrees from Ohio University in experimental psychology.  

Since joining the faculty at UCLA, he has published over 100 research papers in social-science and police-science journals.  He is the author of five books including The Psychology of Murder, Intersections of Psychology, Psychiatry, and Law (Volumes 1, 2, & 3), Eyewitness Expert Testimony, and Memory Enhancing Techniques for Investigative Interviewing: The Cognitive Interview.  Professor Geiselman has conducted training and offered other consulting services for numerous investigative agencies including the FBI, Homeland Security, US Secret Service, US State Department, Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, Singapore Police Force, Health and Human Services, NTSB, Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority, U.S. Marine Corps, Walter-Reed Army Hospital, Black Hat, Force Science Institute, and Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption.

R. Since joining the faculty at UCLA, he has published over 100 research papers in social-science and police-science journals.  He is the author of five books including The Psychology of Murder, Intersections of Psychology, Psychiatry, and Law (Volumes 1, 2, & 3), Eyewitness Expert Testimony, and Memory Enhancing Techniques for Investigative Interviewing: The Cognitive Interview.  Professor Geiselman has conducted training and offered other consulting services for numerous investigative agencies including the FBI, Homeland Security, US Secret Service, US State Department, Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, Singapore Police Force, Health and Human Services, NTSB, Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority, U.S. Marine Corps, Walter-Reed Army Hospital, Black Hat, Force Science Institute, and Hong Kong’s Independent Commission Against Corruption.

Jose L. De La Cruz has over 17 years of public safety experience. He has been a police officer for the Compton Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He is currently a patrol Deputy overseeing several Sheriff Security Officer’s, providing law enforcement duties for the Department of Public Social Services and Department of Mental Health.

Jose has worked custody, patrol and assisted in developing a curriculum for the Department of Homeland Security on Behavior Assessment. Jose also assisted in development and curriculum design on a national curriculum for the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Grants and Training. The purpose of the program was a Weapons of Mass Destruction, national training program for non-sworn transit security personnel (Terrorism Awareness: Protecting the U.S. Public Transportation System). Jose’s responsibilities included writing a detailed curriculum, authoring proposals, work plans and networking with a multitude of agencies, governmental and private alike.

Jose was also part of a Special Problems Unit, targeting crimes against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, specifically the investigation, interviewing, identification and apprehension of graffiti taggers. He also handled and conducted numerous criminal investigations in various types of crimes, ranging from Criminal Homicide to Petty Theft while assigned to patrol.

Robin Carr


Robin is a former New Scotland Yard Detective who served thirty years within the Metropolitan Police London UK.

His experience is in investigating homicides, major crime and specialist high profile investigations. Operationally he has a wealth of experience in investigative interviewing, both witnesses and suspects.

Latterly in his police career he qualified to teach and became the lead instructor at the Hendon Crime Academy both writing and then teaching the advanced interview course to police officers. [PEACE Tier 3]

During this period he also trained in the United States of America with JJ Newberry and others from the Institute of Analytic Interviewing in interviewing techniques, which included micro-expressions and body language and other means to detect deception. [Hot spots]

Herman Camacho conducts interviews and investigations as a consultant for the Institute of Analytic Interviewing. He is also a seminar speaker for training courses for the Institute of Analytic Interviewing. Herman attended California State Fullerton University where he graduated and obtained an Associates of Science degree in Human Sociology.

Herman is a current Law Enforcement officer with 19 years of experience. He worked with California State Police, Compton Police Department until the city merged with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Herman is currently assigned as a senior detective investigating all types of crimes against persons and property. His current assignment consists of high profile investigations, major crimes, bank robberies, kidnaps, and series style of investigations.

Throughout his experience, he has worked in an undercover capacity while interviewing inmates in a custody environment. His undercover investigations consist of street gangs, organized motorcycle gangs, custody style investigations, and organized Central-America cargo gangs. He also conducts street Intel gathering from various types of gang members.

As a qualified trainer he instructs other detectives on updated techniques involving interviews, rapport building, preparation for interviews, statement analysis, micro-expressions and cyber security.

Herman also works in the private sector as an Executive Team Leader – Asset Protection for Risk Control Strategies in the Los Angeles area. Herman is a team leaders were he conducts mobile and static surveillance on employee’s being investigated. Lieutenant  Brian Smith

Lieutenant Smith has 33 years with the Sheriff’s Department. He is currently assigned to the Lancaster Sheriff’s Station, located in the north end of Los Angeles County. He is a recent graduate of the FBI National Academy. Lieutenant Smith has worked a variety of assignments including custody, patrol, investigations, and training. As a lieutenant, he spent 7 years assigned to the Department’s Training Bureau and assisted in managing both sworn and civilian training throughout the Department. Lieutenant Smith is currently an instructor with the Sheriff’s Department Analytical Interviewing Course, which is required for all Department investigators.

Lieutenant Smith also formerly supervised the Department’s Mental Evaluation Team which conducts investigations of the persons with mental illnesses.

Lieutenant Smith has a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

David M. Maxwell, Jr.

David. M. Maxwell, Jr. began his law enforcement career with the Texas Department of Public Safety in November 1972 as a Highway Patrol Trooper. In 1981 he was promoted to sergeant and transferred to the Narcotic Investigation Division, where he worked intensively undercover. He was also the lead investigator on a number of sensitive and complex narcotic investigations. In February 1986 he was appointed to the Texas Rangers, where he specialized in homicide and murder-for-hire investigations, often posing undercover as a hit man. David soon obtained a reputation as a tough, honest and thorough investigator with an uncanny ability to get to the truth of the matter that impresses the most seasoned investigator.

David was one of the lead investigators in the post investigation of the ATF raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, TX and the siege afterwards by the FBI. He displayed the integrity of the Texas Rangers during that investigation by not allowing political pressure to interfere with his obtaining the truth and earned the respect of his peers at all levels of law enforcement.

David’s interviewing skills are recognized by other investigators as being outstanding. Because of this he was asked by ATF to become an instructor for the Analytic Interviewing Course. In 1997 he attended the Advanced Analytic Interviewing Instructor Course at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, Georgia where he shared his techniques and knowledge with the rest of the instructors and students. Since that time he has returned to Texas, where he has practiced and applied in the field what he learned and is now being sought as an instructor and consultant in Analytic Interviewing.

Greg Feldman

Greg Feldman has nearly four decades of law enforcement experience, beginning in the Chicago area where he worked for Northwestern University’s Public Safety Department and the Northfield Police Department. In 1980 he began a 25-year career with the South Miami Police Department, where he headed, at one time or another every division of that agency, spending more than half his career in investigations and retiring in 2005 as Assistant Chief of Police. From there he spent time as the Director of Safety and Security at Johnson & Wales University in North Miami until 2007 when former Florida Attorney General Bob Butterworth tapped him to be the Southern Region Criminal Justice Coordinator for the Florida Department of Children and Families. While performing those duties he remained active in law enforcement as a Reserve Police Officer (for a dollar a year) with the West Miami Police Department. Greg retired as a West Miami Sergeant and from the Coordinator position in 2013, and relocated to Palm Coast FL.

During his tenure with South Miami he received numerous awards and certifications, including Manager of the Year, Sergeant of the Year, Officer of the Month and more. A skilled public speaker and presenter, he functioned as the department’s Public Information Officer for 17 years. He created and administered the police department’s asset forfeiture unit, bringing in well over $1,000,000 in criminal’s ill-gotten gains. For several years he also did Internal Affairs investigations and handled several high profile cases involving agency personnel. He was on the committee which established and built the first Investigative Support Center in Miami (later South Florida HIDTA) and worked with several Federal inter and multi-agency task forces.

Assistant Chief Feldman has attended over 1000 hours of additional training, including the Criminal Justice Institute’s prestigious Senior Leadership Program (class #1) and the Chief Executive Seminar. He has been a certified law enforcement instructor since 1985 and holds a Bachelors degree from the University of Oklahoma. In 2009 he was one of less than two dozen people from around the globe to attend the Institute for Analytical Investigations’ two week train-the-trainer course.

His community contributions include membership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (life), Florida Police Chief’s Association, Miami Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police, Florida Criminal Justice Executive Institute Associates (former state president), Dade Miami Criminal Justice Council, Miami Dade Crimestoppers (board member), All Police Charities (board member) and Miami Dade County Mothers Against Drunk Driving (co-chair). He is a former member of the Florida Bar Grievance Committee and a current Diplomat and Trustee of the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce.

George Gelman

George Gelman has a Bachelor degree in Computer Engineering, a Masters degree in Business Administration and Postgradual diploma in National Security and Strategic Studies.

He is the CEO of Centro Internacional de Inteligencia, S.A. de C.V., Mexico based company specialized in training, consultancy and outsourcing in intelligence, investigations and trustworthiness assessment, as well as other law enforcement topics.

He was an adviser of the Mexican Attorney General, as well as for some major corporations.

From 2001 to 2004, he was the founding Vice-president of IALEIA (International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts) Chapter Mexico. From 2005 to 2007 he was its Treasurer and from 2004 to 2009 was the Director at Large for Latin America and the Caribbean of IALEIA International. In the same Association he was part of the Strategic Planning Committee from 2004 to 2005 and in 2006, he was the General Coordinator of IALEIA World Intelligence Training Conference, realized in Mexico City. He is also a member of other professional associations, like IAFCI (International Association of Financial Crimes Investigators), the Reid Institute, IAFIE (International Association for Intelligence Education) and IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police).

He has been trained in intelligence analysis in different prestigious organizations, like the West Yorkshire Police Training and Development Centre in Wakefield, UK and the Canadian Police College in Ottawa, Canada. He also has been trained in different law enforcement topics, like Interviewing and Interrogation, Scientific Content Analysis, Handwriting Analysis, Crime Analysis, Investigative Analysis, Terrorism Analysis and Hostage Negotiation, just to mention some.

Gretchen Fretter

Gretchen Fretter received her first Master’s Degree from the Trainers of Teacher Trainers Program at the University of Pittsburgh. She received her B.A. and her Standard Secondary Teaching Credential at UC Berkeley. She taught French, a skill acquired from her childhood and college years studying in Paris and in Grenoble.

Gretchen’s father, a professor of Physics at Cal and her other mentor, August Vollmer an early professor of Criminology at Cal, Chief of Police in Berkeley and inventor/collaborator on the polygraph machine were formative in her decision to enter the East Bay Regional Police Department.

She graduated with honors from the Police Academy and served as Patrol Officer, Sergeant, Acting Lieutenant and Homicide Detective prior to taking the position as Police Academy Manager at the Contra Costa Regional Training Center at Los Medanos College. She received her second Master’s Degree in Public Administration in 1991. She was named Director of the Training Center responsible for not only the Police Academy but all of the Advanced Officer courses, the Paramedic Academy, Fire Academy, EMT and an extensive curriculum of the college level courses associated with law enforcement, fire and pre-hospital care.

Gretchen met Paul Ekman when she hosted the Analytic Interviewing course that Paul Ekman and JJ Newberry created for advanced interviewing training. She continued her training and teaching with Paul Ekman after she retired from the Training Center. She teaches for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and the South Bay Regional Training Center. Gretchen team taught with Sue Oliviera and Mark Peterson to deliver one of the first Emotions Revealed courses in Pacific Grove.

Gretchen lives in the California foothills. She raises grass-fed beef on her ranch, serves in the El Dorado County Mounted Search and Rescue Unit and enjoys a new endeavor in Real Estate helping people find the wonderful style of life she knows.

James Brunet

Mr. James Brunet is an attorney admitted to practice in Florida, an active duty police officer with a large metropolitan Florida police department and a certified Analytic Interviewing instructor.

James earned his Juris Doctor degree with high honors in 2004 from Florida Coastal School of Law in Jacksonville, Florida. While in law school, James was an active member of the Moot Court and Law Review, and served as a teaching assistant for several first and second year courses. James has been involved with practice in several areas of law including civil, criminal, and appellate, and is presently serving as the Assistant Police Legal Advisor at the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office. James earned his BA with honors from the University of North Florida, with a dual major in Criminal Justice and Political Science, and has completed all the didactic course work for a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) at the same institution.

Additionally, James is a certified police officer in the state of Florida, has completed numerous advanced law enforcement training courses, has completed the Police Legal Advisor’s Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Georgia, and recently became certified to teach Analytic Interviewing after attending the Institute of Analytic Interviewing instructor’s course in early 2010.

In addition to being an attorney, James is also an active duty police officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (“JSO”). He has been a member of the JSO for 24 years, beginning his career as a reserve police officer while stationed in Jacksonville with the United States Navy, leading to his present position as a member of the Sheriff’s executive staff in the Legal Unit. During his many years with the JSO, James has worked in a variety of assignments, including the legal unit, patrol, narcotics and vice, investigations, undercover and surveillance, bicycle patrol, aviation, and as a member of the police scuba team. James’s diverse law enforcement career and his educational background have afforded him many opportunities to both hone and teach his interviewing and rapport-building skills.

James has taught a number of courses and given many presentations on various topics, and he recently attained his Florida law enforcement instructor’s certificate. James routinely teaches at the JSO Police Academy and has become adept at tailoring his message to his audience. As one recent student commented, James’ instruction was “the most relevant” she has had. James’s real-world, street experience combined with his academic achievement and intellectual curiosity give him a unique perspective and the ability to relate well to diverse groups. James has also formed a company called “The Whole Truth” through which he will teach Analytic Interviewing and a testimonial skills course, “True Testimony” he developed for police officers and other professionals who must routinely testify in court or depositions.

The overall seminar topics, length, format, and content can be customized to meet your needs. These hosted seminars are available on either a contract or co-sponsored basis.  With either the contract or the co-sponsor option, the hosting agency will need to provide a suitable training location.

Contract Program

Any of IAI’s  seminars can be conducted on a contract basis, offering the agency a fixed rate based on number of seats from your specific agency.  This allows a specific agency to estimate its costs accurately and to train more investigators at a reduced cost.  Investigators from other agencies may be invited at the discretion of the contracting organization.
